Lionel Messi has an estimated net worth of $115 million dollars

Lionel Messi is an Argentinian professional soccer player with an estimated net worth of $115 million. Messi is 5’7″ and weighs 148 pounds. Messi was born on June 24, 1987 in Rosario, Argentina. He is a forward for FC Barcelona in Spain. Messi’s father, Jorge, was a factory steel worker, and his mother, Celia Cuccittini, a part time cleaner, in the second largest city in the South American nation. Like most Argentines, Messi started playing soccer at a very young age, but showed unusual talent, even despite a very slight build. At the age of 11, Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency which scared away several local teams from signing him to their youth teams. Even so, relatives of Messi living in Spain made an executive of the powerful Barcelona team aware of the prodigious talent and the club agreed to fly the youngster over to join their youth academy and pay for his hormone treatments.

Messi became part of Barcelona’s vaunted youth academy team and surpassed all of his peers. He debuted with the top level professional team in a friendly match in 2003, when he was only 16 years old. Messi then joined the top squad the following year and made his official debut in October 2004 at 17, making him the third youngest ever to play for Barcelona.  He would score his first goal that same season. The next season, Messi gained his Spanish citizenship and went on to score six goals in 17 appearances in the Spanish league and one goal in six games in the prestigious Champions League tournament. Barcelona won both tournaments that year.  In 2006, Messi established himself as a regular starter for the squad and a dangerous scoring threat, netting 14 times in 26 appearances, including a hat-trick against arch-rival Real Madrid. He also was part of Argentina’s national team which played in the World Cup in Germany. Over the next couple of seasons, Messi continued to improve and his status as one of the best players in the world grew.

His stardom hit previously unimagined heights in 2008-2009 when he led what is widely considered one of the greatest teams ever to a treble – winning the domestic league and cup and Champions League title in the same year. He also won a gold medal with Argentina in the 2008 Olympics. Barcelona would go on to dominate world soccer over the next four years winning another Champions League in 2011 and several more league titles. Messi would win an unprecedented four consecutive Ballon d’Or’s (for the best soccer player in the world) from 2009 to 2012,  as well as set scoring records for goals in a season in Spain (50 goals in 2012) and overall goals in a calendar year (91 in 2012). Messi is generally considered the best soccer player in the world and his celebrity has resulted in several major endorsement deals, including Pepsi, Adidas and Turkish Airlines.
