Gilbert Arenas is an American professional basketball player with an estimated net worth of $50 million. He is currently a guard with the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association. Arenas is 6’4″ and weighs 215 pounds. Gilbert Jay Arenas, Jr. was born on January 6, 1982 in Tampa, Florida. Arenas’ parents were estranged at the time of his birth and initially he went to live with his mother in Miami. After she got in trouble, however, Arenas’ father gained custody of his son and raised him on his own. Arenas Sr. had been a standout baseball player and played for the University of Miami’s football team in 1980. He would eventually parlay his good looks into a modeling and acting career and moved to Los Angeles to further that career, taking the 7-year-old Arenas with him.
As his father worked odd jobs in between acting gigs, Arenas developed his basketball game. Although short for his size, he became a standout his sophomore year in high school and continued to impressive through his senior season. He attended Arizona University and played for coach Lute Olson on a team packed with talent. In his second season, Arenas led the Wildcats to the NCAA Championship Final Four and a championship game appearance, which they eventually lost to Duke. Arenas then elected to enter the 2001 NBA Draft where he was selected early in the second round by the Golden State Warriors. After not being given much playing time in his rookie season, he started 30 games in his second year mostly playing point guard and averaged 14.1 points and 5.1 assists.
His third season in the pros proved to that he was ready for the big time averaging 18.3 points and 6.3 assists for the Warriors. After the year, Gilbert became a free agent and signed a six-year $65 million with the Washington Wizards averaging 25.5 points, 5.1 assists and 4.7 rebounds. He continued improving his scoring average, topping out at 29.3 points per game in 2005. He continued to lead the Wizards and was among the most explosive players in the league before injuries began slowing him down in 2007. He opted out of his contract in 2008 but eventually re-signed with the Wizards getting a six-year contract worth $111 million. Injuries and a controversy surrounding Arenas bringing guns into the locker room (leading to a long suspension) have curtailed Arenas’ impact in recent years, and in 2010 when he was traded to the Orlando Magic. The next year he was waived and signed with the Memphis Grizzlies where he backed up the starting point guard. In 2012 he signed to play in China. Arenas has four children with Laura Govan, who would go on to appear on the reality show Basketball Wives.
