Robert Townsend has an estimated net worth of $2 million

Robert Townsend is an American actor, comedian, writer, film director and producer with an estimated net worth of $2 million. Townsend is best known for starring in the WV sitcom The Parent ‘Hood. He is 5’11″ and weighs 178 pounds. Robert Townsend was born on February 6, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois. Raised by a single mom, Townsend was captivated by television at a young age and spent much of his time imitating characters on the screen and unknowingly honing his future craft. In school he read Shakespeare’s Oedipus Rex in front of the class and dazzled them, eventually leading the fledgling actor to Chicago’s Experimental Bag Theatre.

Townsend would then go to New York to join the stand-up comedian circuit at The Improvisation. Although he would enroll for school at Illinois State University in 1974, he dropped out a year later to pursue comedy and acting full time. He got small parts in a number of important and big films for the next decade, including the coming-of-age drama Cooley High (1975), Monkey Hustle (1976) and later Streets of Fire (1984), A Soldier’s Story (1984) and American Flyer (1985). Townsend’s big break was self manufactured when he wrote, directed and produced the independent film Hollywood Shuffle, which documented the struggle of African Americans trying to break stereotypes in Hollywood. Although the film was only a moderate financial success (made $5 million on a $100,000 budget) it did showcase Townsend’s talents.

Townsend would go on to star alongside Denzel Washington in The Mighty Quinn (1989) and write, direct, produce and star in The Five Heartbeats in 1991. He also gained notoriety for starring in the television series The Parent ‘Hood (1995-1999) before directing and starring in several more movies well into the new century. He has also hosted HBO specials and variety shows, produced and directed made-for-television movies. His last major project was directing Phantom Punch in 2009. He was married to actress Cheri Jones from 1990 to 2001 and has three children with her.
