Lucy Liu is an American actress with an estimated net worth of $15 million dollars.  Lucy Alexis Liu was born December 2, 1968 in Queens, New York. The child of two Chinese immigrants who met and married in New York. Her mother Cecelia worked as a biochemist and her father Tom worked as a civil engineer. Lucy learned Mandarin at a young age and began learning English at the age of five. Lucy had dreams of becoming a Hollywood actress although she rarely saw Asian actresses on the big screen. She once said to the New York Times, “When you’re younger and you don’t  feel like you quite fit in anywhere, you think there must be a community of misfits that you can fall into.” She tells People, ” The popular girls were all blondes. I wanted to be Barbie and I was as opposite to Barbie as you could get.” Lucy is five feet and three inches tall and weighs 109 pounds. 

While traveling on the subway in New York Lucy was discovered by a talent agent and booked one commercial at the age of nineteen. Lucy enrolled into New York University but transferred to the University of Michigan after a year. She majored in Asian studies while attending the university. During her senior year of college, Lucy auditioned for the the university’s production of Alice in Wonderland. She auditioned for a supporting role, but ended up getting cast as the lead. She was surprised because she never thought they would cast an Asian for the traditionally Caucasian lead. In 1992 Lucy performed in New York with the stage play Fairy Bones directed by Tina Chen.

Lucy then moved to California in the 90s to pursue acting seriously. She auditioned a lot and received small roles in commercials and TV shows like Beverly Hills:90210 and ER. Lucy got her big break when she auditioned for a role on Ally McBeal. She auditioned for the role of “Nelle Porter”, but the show creator David E. Kelley decided to develop a character specifically for Lucy. She ended up playing Ling Woo, a role that was intended to be temporary but turned into a permanent role. She left the show in 2001 to pursue film after earning a SAG Award nomination and Emmy nomination for her work on Ally McBeal.

In 1999 People named Lucy as one of the 50 Most Beautiful people. In 2000 she was cast as Alex Munday in Charlie’s Angels alongside superstars Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore. The film grossed $264 million dollars worldwide.  The second installment Charlie’s Angels:Full Throttle earned $269 million worldwide. In 2003 Lucy played O-Ren Ishii in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. This role led to her winning an MTV award for “Best Movie Villain.” She currently plays “Joan Watson” on CBS’ crime drama Elementary.
