He is six feet tall and weighs 170 pounds. Javier Angel Encinas Bardem was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain on March 1, 1969. Bardem was practically born win a script in his hand and his mother was an actress and he came from a family with a long list of acting credits, including in the earliest days of Spanish cinema. After his birth, his parents separated leaving his mother to raise him by herself. Fortunately, she encouraged him to act and he started his career at the age of six when he appeared in the film, El Picaro. Despite his familial inclination to film, he was interested in a wide of array of subjects growing up and actually played rugby for the Spanish National team and originally wanted to be a painter rather than an actor.

Still, Bardem would take small roles in film and shows to make ends meet and eventually found his true calling. He would get his first notoriety from a small part in the 1990 film, The Ages of Lulu when he was 20. He then would light up the screen as the male lead in Jamon, Jamon in 1992, in which he played an underwear model and bullfighter alongside Penelope Cruz. Bardem would go on to star in two dozen films in Spain and although he had been approached to act in English language films he initially resisted because his English was poor. But that changed when he grasped command of the language and was cast in the lead in the acclaimed Before Night Falls in 2000. The film garnered critical praise, a Oscar nomination for Best Actor and established Bardem as a hot property for American talent scouts.

His star would continue to rise with roles in The Dancer Upstairs (2002), The Sea Inside (2004) and first graced the screen in a big Hollywood movie as a drug dealer in Tom Cruise’s Collateral. After staring in Goya’s Ghost in 2006, opposite Natalie Portman, Bardem would get his two biggest roles. First, he played the unforgettable hitman in the Coen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men, for which he became the first Spaniard to win a Best Support Actor Oscar, and followed it up by playing the lead in Love in the Time of Cholera, both in 2007. Since then, Bardem has been a Hollywood A-Lister, playing the lead in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) and villain in the latest James Bond flick, Skyfall (2012).
