Clarence was born on August 21, 1939 in New York City, NY and discovered a love for performing as a young child at the YMCA in Harlem. After a two-year stint in the US Air Force, the actor appeared in a number of theatre productions notably The Long Dream, Slow Dance on the Killing Ground, Doubletalk, and Sarah and the Sax. He was a natural on the stage, receiving numerous accolades for his performances including a Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination.

In 1968, Clarence made the transition from theatre to television with his most recognizable acting role as “Linc Hayes” in the ABC cop show The Mod Squad. The show’s instant success catapulted the actor and his co-stars to overnight fame as some of TV’s most popular actors. After the show’s successful five year run ended in 1973, the actor returned to the theatre to avoid being type cast in 1970s “blacksploitation” films that were being offered to African-American actors of that time. In the 1980s, he returned in front of the camera with appearances on hit TV shows Hill Street Blues, Miami Vice and Everybody Hates Chris and in films Tales from the Hood (1995), and The General’s Daughter (1999) and Reindeer Games (2000).

With an impressive career spanning over four decades, the actor’s most recent works include the shows Justified and Memphis Beat and the 2013 critically-acclaimed drama Lee Daniel’s The Butler. Clarence was married to actress Gloria Foster and has no children
