Boris Frederic Cecil Tay-Natey Ofuatey-Kodjoe was born on March 8, 1973 in Vienna, Austria. The son of a German psychologist and Ghanaian physician, Kodjoe grew up in Austria. His maternal grandmother survived the Holocaust in hiding although his great grandmother did not. A natural athlete he traveled to the United States to attend college on a tennis scholarship and graduated with a degree in marketing in 1996.
Although a talented athlete, injuries curtailed his tennis career but he quickly found solace in acting and modeling where his handsome looks quickly landed him work. Kodjoe first appeared in a series of smaller roles most notably in movies like Love & Basketball (2000) and Brown Sugar (2002) but came to the attention of wider audiences as part of the cast of Showtime’s Soul Food from 2000 to 2004. In 2002 he was named as one of People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People in the World” which helped raise his stature even higher and land him roles in a variety of television and film projects.
Kodjoe has continued to get roles in a variety of popular television shows and films, most notably turns on Nip/Tuck, in the movie Surrogates and as the male lead in J.J. Abrams Undercovers, although it was quickly cancelled. He also starred in the popular film franchise Resident: Evil: Afterlife. Recently, Kodjoe has been a cast member on BET’s Real Husbands of Hollywood. He married his former Soul Food co-star Nicole Arie Parker in 2005 and the couple has two children.
